Classification of Common Dosage Forms of Veterinary Drugs

Jan. 28, 2022

Veterinary drug dosage form is a form of raw materials and excipients that are processed and modulated to facilitate use, storage and transportation. Commonly used veterinary drug dosage forms are different according to the different dispersion media.

Veterinary medicine is often divided into bulk, water-soluble powder, solution, injection and tablet.

Water-soluble powder

Water-soluble powder is a soluble powder composed of one or several drugs and co-solvents, suspension aids and other excipients. It is put into drinking water to dissolve the drug and disperse it evenly for animals to drink.

Advantages

①Mix more evenly.

②Better effect on group disease control, to ensure that sick animals and poultry can ingest enough drugs.

③For Chinese herbal medicine, the active ingredient can be extracted and made into granular material to realize the drug administration in drinking water.

Disadvantages

①Due to the change of weather in four seasons, the high and low temperature affects the amount of water for livestock and poultry.

②For feedlots using nipple-type automatic drinkers (such as egg farms, etc.), drug delivery is not very convenient.

③The storage quality of the drug is relatively unstable because the water-soluble excipients are mostly glucose, which is more hygroscopic and easy to caking.

Solution

Solution (including oral solution, suspension, emulsion) solution is a non-volatile chemical drug dissolved in water and made of drugs, can be used for internal or external use. The solutions are generally clear; oil-soluble solutions are not clear, such as florfenicol solution.

Advantages

①Basically the same as water-soluble powder.

②Suspension or emulsion is an effective way for water-insoluble substances or fat-soluble drugs to be administered in water, but it is less common.

Disadvantages

①High requirements for the stability of drugs, general antibiotics should not be made into this dosage form.

②The packaging has certain requirements, and transportation is not convenient.

Dispersion

Dispersion is a widely used drug dosage form. The drug is ground into powder form and can be mixed with feed or dissolved in water and fed to animals.

Advantages

①More commonly used. Mostly added to feed as an additive and used as a control drug. Save labor and time.

②Easy to store and relatively stable quality.

Disadvantages

①May not be mixed evenly.

②Dose is not easy to control because of age, species, temperature and other factors affecting the collection amount.

Tablets

Tablets are made by mixing one or more drugs with appropriate amount of excipients, and then pressed into flat or slightly raised small round tablets on both sides by a tablet press, mainly for internal use, such as sulfadimethoxine tablets and albendazole tablets. In addition, there are sugar-coated tablets, enteric-coated tablets and implanted tablets, but they are rarely used in animals.

Decoction

Decoction or immersion The liquid obtained after boiling raw herbs with a certain amount of water for a certain amount of time is called decoction, and most of the Chinese medicines are taken after boiling in this way; if raw herbs are put into water and soaked for a certain number of days, the liquid obtained is called immersion. Both decoction and immersion are used for decoction and immersion, and are not durable for storage.
